“Leo” (Leopold) Verstraete January 16, 1946 – Sept 27, 2017 Leo was diagnosed with Lewy Body Disease in early 2007.  It eventually completely overwhelmed & ravaged his body and mind, leaving behind only his ability to hear in his last days.  Nevertheless, he lived his life to the fullest every single day that he was able:  running, riding his bicycle and hiking.  His fun-loving playful spirit was infectious and he shared it with everyone he met.  Leo passed away quietly at 4:55 pm on Wednesday, Sept 27th in the arms of his loving wife, Christine and surrounded by this son, Tien; daughter-in-law, Cathy; grandson, Jules; granddaughter, Zelia; brother, Barry, and sister, Katherine; as well as neighbors, Karen and Derek.  Special thanks to loving friends and caregivers, Sashi, Liza, Elgin and Richard for their help, and to Father Dion for personally administering last rites.  We are so grateful.

Service will be held at Good Shepherd Church, 2250 – 150th Street, Surrey, B.C. at 11:30 a.m. on September 30, 2017.  Reception following. View Tribute Book.

Dear Christine, Tien and Family,

I was so saddened to learn of Leo's passing last evening when I opened up my email, my heart just sank. Words are not enough to express for how deeply sorry I am for the loss of your beloved Leo. For me, and to all those who knew him, know what a kind hearted, gentle loving man he was with an incredibly beautiful soul inside and out. He will be greatly missed by all. May God provide you strength and courage to cope during this most difficult time. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy and know with every note of a pan flute we all have an Angel shining down upon us with the biggest smile forever placed in our hearts.

Much love to you all,
Mary-Jo

Dear Christine, Tien and the rest of the family,

I have a lot of beautiful memories about Leo, I remember him as a really cool person with a great sense of humour and a positive mindset. He would always be smiling. It's a real shame Lena did not get the chance to meet him, since I'm absolutely sure she would have loved him and his personality.

Rest in peace, Leo.

Dear aunt Christine and nephew Tien and family,

First of all accept our condolences and we wish you strength.
We miss him very much. Luckily, we hold him close to us in our memories. We visited Vancouver a couple of times, at the beginning with my parents, later with Nancy and our children. He, and all of you, always made us feel welcomed. He always made sure to entertain us at his house, feed us wonderful meals prepared by him and Christine. He made sure our travel and stay was free of any concerns.
When he joined you on your visits to Belgium, we were always happy because of the warmhearted family gatherings.
If something happened to someone of the family, he always was the first to support or help in any way. Even if he lived remotely and far away.
We remember him as a family man, family was so important to him.

Leopold, we want to thank you again for everything and we will treasure all the wonderful memories of you with our parents and our family!
